The high-end fashion world has always been criticized for becoming extravagant with its ways. The fashion world is one of those spheres that are considered to be highly demand-elastic, because the demand for fashion goods rapidly expands as a person's wealth accumulates. Not surprisingly, a person who is rich enough will only want to wear the best materials available.

The extravagance is not limited to the fashion world anyway. It is only a symptom of a greater problem of our culture of excesses. Just look at this news from Yahoo! (linked below) about how extravagant a luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi was by spending US$11 million on a single Christmas tree.

This is not related to the fashion world at all, but I just wanted to show that point. How could a hotel possibly spend that much money on a Christmas tree? Even the tallest Christmas trees in the world do not cost that much--well, not until you put in a lot of jewels and gold to decorate your Christmas trees.

It is not that surprising at all if you know the background of the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. After all, this is exactly the same Abu Dhabi hotel that features its own gold bar vending machine (who would want that?!) and offers a 1-week $1 million package that includes a private jet trip around the Middle East. The Christmas tree is a mere addition to the hotel's line of extravagant offerings.

Interestingly, the hotel was also quick to apologize once criticisms already started to pour in. According to them, it was a poor decision to overload the tradition with those excessive decorations. The management was quick to distance itself from the tree, saying that it was the hotel jeweler who designed the tree and that the hotel was only a venue for exhibiting the tree.

And then a lot of people here actually complain if one's dress is studded with a lot of precious gems.
